It’s a long way from $700 billion, but the media start-up Six Apart is introducing its own economic bailout plan. The TypePad Journalist Bailout Program offers recently terminated bloggers and journalists a free pro account (worth $150 annually) on the company's popular blogging platform. In addition to the free yearly membership, the 20 to 30 journalists who are accepted will receive professional tech support, placement on the company's blog aggregation site, Blogs.com, and automatic enrollment in the company's advertising revenue-sharing program.

STUDENT WRITERS AND MENTORS
DESCRIPTION:
Student Writers and Mentors Sought – A newly launched website created with a J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism, and McCormick Foundation grant for New Media Women Entrepreneurs,latina-voices.com,   is seeking students interested in writing for the website. A small stipend may be offered to student writers. Mentors are also being sought to encourage the students to develop their writing and reporting voices. Editor Teresa Puente is working with about 10 students in Chicago, but if you want to mentor any in your area, let her know.

14th Minority Writers Seminar is  April 30-May 3, 2009 in Nashville <> 

The 14th annual Minority Writers Seminar will be held April 30-May 3, 2009, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute at Vanderbilt University.

Enrollment is limited to 20 for the seminar sponsored by the National Conference of Editorial Writers Foundation in partnership with the Diversity Institute. Minority journalists who have been writing opinion less than two years may also apply.
 

The program's purpose is to give experienced minority journalists an opportunity to explore the nuts-and-bolts of opinion writing and encourage them to consider making a career move, said Foundation president John Taylor, retired editorial page editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware.

NCEW Foundation pays for lodging and food at the Seminar and reimburses  participants up to $200 each for their transportation to and from Nashville.

Experienced editorialists work closely with participants who attend simulated editorial board meetings and write editorials that are critiqued. The seminar also includes presentations on the craft of persuasive writing and keynote addresses by nationally known speakers.

Taylor said Doug Lyons, senior editorial writer at South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale and a 1997 graduate of the Seminar, will serve as seminar director for the third year. Lyons and other past participants rave about the practical advice and valuable insights gleaned from the workshop which has a success rate of 23 % of the graduates of the first 12 seminars writing opinion professionally.
