JOB TITLE:
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
COMPANY:
NEW YOUTH CONNECTIONS (NYC)
LOCATION:
NEW YORK CITY, NY
DESCRIPTION:
ASSOCIATE EDITOR for professional, nonprofit monthly magazine written by New York City public high school students on social, political, and personal issues (circ. 70,000). Duties include: training and supervising a diverse teen staff in writing and reporting, developing story ideas and issue themes, editing stories and managing magazine production. $38-$41K.

QUALIFICATIONS
The two editors of New Youth Connections (NYC) work intensively with a group of young people between the ages of 14 and 20 to shape a magazine that reflects the concerns and interests of New York City teens. Our writers have a lot to say but often have marginal skills and little or no journalism experience. In addition, many are struggling with and writing about significant emotional issues related to their family, school and home life. The ideal candidate would work well with young people, be intuitive and empathetic, have excellent writing and editing skills, and some background in journalism and teaching or youth work. The ability to plan and meet deadlines is essential.
In addition, this job requires the ability to work effectively in a loosely structured environment in which broad goals have been determined, but in which the editor has a very large measure of autonomy and responsibility for figuring out how to achieve them.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The associate editor works closely with the editor to produce NYC, which comes out every six weeks during the school year. Duties range from helping writers come up with ideas and assigning stories, to collaborating with the art department, to proofreading final pages. Following is a list of major responsibilities in their approximate order of importance:

Supervise & Train Teen Writers. At any given time you will be developing one-on-one collaborative relationships with up to a dozen teen interns and volunteers. You’ll help them explore their lives and experiences, develop and focus their ideas, and guide their reporting as they interview their peers and adult experts. You will occasionally accompany them on assignments in many New York City neighborhoods. Most importantly, however, you’ll hold regular story discussions and provide careful readings and detailed written comments on their writing, helping them work through as many as a dozen drafts of each story to produce a publishable piece under deadline pressure.

Edit Student Work. You will be expected to edit each piece for content, clarity, fairness, accuracy, grammar, usage, and style. You will edit a range of stories, including personal essays, reported stories, and reviews. You will also work with a range of writers, including teens who don’t know when to stop writing and teens who need to have each paragraph pried out of them. Because many of our stories are about personal experiences, you will also work closely with writers to help them identify and describe the key emotions and experiences they want to convey. Editors often take on a counseling role as they help guide writers through their stories and their lives. You will work collaboratively with each writer to find the form, structure, style and story length appropriate to the topic, the writer’s ability, and the interest of our readers.
It is also important to provide thoughtful feedback on stories you’re not directly responsible for. NYC is a professional publication and our editors adhere to high journalistic standards.

Co-teach Intensive Journalism Workshops. Together with the other editor, each summer you’ll give a group of 10 teen interns a crash course in the basic skills they need to write and report. You’ll then supervise them as they prepare their stories for publication. You’ll also help plan and facilitate regular editorial meetings and discussions with writers throughout the year.

Production. The editors work together on story selection and layout, headline writing, proofing galleys, selecting artwork, and other production-related tasks. (A full-time desktop publishing person assembles the pages.) These often require several late nights during the two weeks before we go to press.

Collaborate on Youth Communication Projects. Youth Communication publishes two magazines, often has several book projects underway, and also provides occasional staff development training to teachers and child welfare workers. From time to time you will be expected to attend conferences, provide input on funding proposals, and participate in special events and other organizational activities. Our small adult staff maintains a cooperative work environment. Job responsibilities are sometimes indistinct and often overlap.

Youth Development. While it is not required that the associate editor have a background in youth work, social work or counseling, it is essential that, over time, editors become familiar with emotional and developmental issues and how to use narrative techniques to work with youth from a strengths-based perspective.

Freelance Work: Because of the demanding learning curve, no freelance work is permitted during your first six months. In addition, our experience has been that editing a Youth Communication magazine does not allow for any but the most occasional freelance work (unless you do not sleep). If you expect to continue or initiate a freelance career, this is not the job for you.

HOURS/PAY/BENEFITS
Schedule: We work on a one-year cycle. While you’ll be starting in the middle of the school year, this is not typical (or ideal) for our new editors. It is very important to us that you commit to work for a complete school year—at least through August 2010.
            Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Vacation/Benefits: Youth Communication offers 8 holidays, plus 15 vacation days and 3 personal days the first year, though vacations must be scheduled around our publishing requirements. After three months you are eligible for a fully paid individual health plan. After six months we offer a modest pension plan and Transit Checks.
Salary: $38,000-$41,000/year, commensurate with experience in teaching, youth work, journalism, editing, writing and supervision.

  <>ABOUT YOUTH COMMUNICATION

OUR MISSION
Youth Communication helps New York City public school students develop the attitudes and acquire the skills and information they need to make thoughtful choices about their lives. We do that by:
            • training teens in journalism and related skills;
            • producing publications written and illustrated by young people;
            • encouraging teens and the adults who work with them to use our publications to stimulate reading, writing, discussion, and reflection.
We currently publish two magazines: New Youth Connections, founded in 1980, is a general interest magazine with a readership of 200,000 in New York City. Represent is written by and for young people in foster care and is distributed nationwide.
We also have published more than 70 anthologies of our teens’ best stories in books and booklets, which we market through direct mail and on the web.
Several underlying principles inform our activities:
            • Teens need a public forum for sharing their experiences, exploring the issues that affect their lives, and identifying their common concerns. Our magazines are designed to provide that forum.
            • For young writers and artists, producing a magazine for their peers is a powerful learning experience. Through a rigorous process that begins by reflecting on their own experiences and place in the world, our students acquire a range of skills and develop the self-awareness necessary to effect change in their lives and in society at large.
            • Teens who read little else are motivated to read stories which accurately reflect their experience and concerns. The stories we publish provide a rich source of information and peer perspectives.
Reading and writing remain the best ways to encourage reflection, promote thoughtful discussion, and stimulate the imagination. Literate citizens are essential to the survival of a diverse, democratic society.

OUR ADULT STAFF
Including the position you’re applying for, our adult staff of 11 includes nine full-time staff: a publisher/executive director, two editors for each of our two publications, an editorial director, an administrative director, a marketing director, and a production director; and three part-time staff: an administrative assistant, a desktop publishing assistant, and an illustration instructor.
CONTACT:
Please submit your resume, cover letter, and two writing samples through regular mail
(no e-mail, no phone calls).
We are unable to respond to resumes unless you
are selected for an interview.
Send resume, cover letter and two writing samples to:
 NYC,
224 W. 29th St.
, 2nd fl.,

People of color strongly encouraged to apply. No calls or e-mail, please.

Interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis until the position is filled. We will contact only those candidates we intend to interview. Please read more about Youth Communication and New Youth Connections at http://www.youthcomm.org  before applying.
